About the position
The Transportation Engineer 1 - Design position at the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) involves working under the supervision of a Registered Professional Engineer to gain comprehensive experience in various engineering functions. The role includes participating in a work-based training program that rotates through different work units such as Construction, Highway Management, and Planning & Engineering. The engineer will perform tasks that facilitate operational efficiency, ensure compliance with project specifications, and develop professional relationships within the department and with external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Assist a Registered Professional Engineer in completing engineering assignments.
- Participate in a work-based training program to gain experience in engineering functions.
- Travel to inspect existing projects to ensure contractor compliance with plans and guidelines.
- Conduct traffic studies and research specific locations for safety improvements.
- Draft detailed construction drawings and perform design tasks using engineering software.
- Review highway and bridge plans for technical and legal accuracy.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering.
- Accepted for Basic Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (EIT exam) by Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with civil engineering software such as MicroStation.
- Knowledge of traffic safety regulations and standards.
