The Transportation Engineer 9-12 (Bridge Unit Design Engineer) position at the Bureau of Bridges & Structures involves working on a multi-disciplinary team to design and reconstruct various structures, including bridges and culverts, across Michigan. The role emphasizes the application of structural engineering principles, project specifications development, and collaboration with construction oversight teams to address challenges and ensure compliance with design standards.

Responsibilities

  • Complete field visits to bridge sites throughout Michigan to verify project scope.
  • Coordinate with team members to gather information impacting project design.
  • Propose innovative solutions to structural challenges.
  • Utilize design programs and tools to design structural elements.
  • Review shop drawings and construction submittals for compliance with project specifications.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
  • Possession of a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering preferred.
  • Transportation Engineer 9: No specific experience required.
  • Transportation Engineer 10: One year of professional engineering experience in transportation systems equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 9.
  • Transportation Engineer P11: Two years of professional engineering experience in transportation systems, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10.
  • Transportation Engineer 12: Three years of professional engineering experience in transportation systems, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11.
  • Possession of a registered professional engineer license may substitute for 6 months of experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in bridge or structural design.
  • Familiarity with Bentley Microstation.
