About the position

As a Transportation Engineer I, II, or III with the Traffic Operations Design Office in the Dallas District, you will play a crucial role in the design and implementation of traffic signals, lighting, and intelligent transportation systems. In this role, you will be responsible for performing transportation engineering work related to project development and design for transportation and traffic operations, construction, and maintenance. You will ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. Your work will involve significant interaction with governmental officials and private entities, requiring strong communication and coordination skills. You will utilize Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, including Microstation/Open Roads Designer and SignCad, to create designs for traffic signals, illumination, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). As an engineer at this level, you will follow standard practices and will not require frequent supervision of details. The essential duties of this position include assisting with design and plan preparation, coordinating and monitoring assigned projects, conducting capacity and level of service studies, and reviewing traffic control and ITS plans. You will also monitor consultants' progress, check invoices, and prepare supplemental agreements. Your engineering design work will encompass the development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts, as well as overseeing traffic engineering operations. This position may also involve other job responsibilities as assigned, providing a diverse range of experiences in the field of transportation engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with design, computer operations, and plan preparation.
  • Coordinates and monitors assigned projects/programs/plans.
  • Coordinates on design schematics, assists with capacity and level of service studies, and reviews in-house and consultant traffic control/traffic management/intelligent transportation systems (ITS) plans and projects.
  • Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
  • Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts.
  • Responsible for Traffic Engineering operations.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS.
  • Transportation Engineer I: 4 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
  • Transportation Engineer II: 5 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
  • Transportation Engineer III: 6 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.
  • Valid driver's license required for driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to obtain within six months of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of traffic operations design with Microstation/Open Roads Designer and SignCad.
  • Knowledge of Plans Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) project management and associated letting tasks.
