About the position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), Bureau of Engineering and Construction, District 1 Surveys Section, is looking to hire a Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) with a target class of Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) in Rocky Hill. Current students who will be graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management by the end of May 2025 are strongly encouraged to apply! The District 1 Surveys section performs various types of land surveying, including topographic mapping, boundary and construction surveys. The Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor) will learn to operate survey field instruments, use surveying software, and develop topographic mapping for future construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Operate survey field instruments, such as conventional and robotic Total Stations, Auto and Digital Levels, GPS receivers.
  • Use surveying software to perform complex computations.
  • Use Microstation/Bentley OpenRoads CADD to prepare, revise and edit land surveys for mapping.
  • Develop topographic mapping and DTM's for future Highway and Railroad construction projects.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree.
  • General knowledge of land surveying and transportation.
  • Experience with construction engineering theories, principles, and methods.
  • Skilled in computer aided design software (MicroStation preferred) and other computer applications including Word and Excel.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read and analyze construction plans and estimates.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with CADD, preferably Microstation/Bentley Open Roads.
  • Experience working with/interpreting construction plans and survey maps.
  • Experience operating various land surveying instruments (total station, level and GPS/GNSS receivers).
