The Transportation Engineering Technician II position at the South Carolina Department of Transportation involves performing independent inspections across various fields related to transportation engineering. The technician is responsible for producing detailed reports based on these inspections in a timely manner, ensuring that all documentation is accurate and comprehensive. This role requires the maintenance of inspection and testing equipment, as well as the completion of daily time sheets and monthly mileage reports to track work activities effectively. In addition to inspections, the technician will conduct weekly traffic and erosion control inspections as assigned, preparing all necessary reports that accompany these inspections. The role also involves making basic interpretations of engineering plans and specifications, assisting in verifying surveys, and participating in construction layout activities. The technician will utilize various survey instruments, metering devices, tape measures, and test equipment to perform survey duties. Furthermore, this position includes the responsibility of assisting in training other inspectors in all areas of inspection and survey verification, ensuring that all team members are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge. The physical demands of this position are significant, requiring frequent bending, kneeling, and stooping, as well as the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. The technician will be expected to walk for extended periods, navigate rough terrain, and work in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. There may also be occasional exposure to noise, and the role may require working outside of normal schedules, including weekends.
