About the position
The South Shore Line is seeking 1 to 2 motivated and dedicated interns to join our Transportation Department. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the railroad industry, working both days and nights to support our operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in transportation logistics and engineering, safety protocols, and operational management. The South Shore Line is an equal opportunity employer. Responsibilities
- Assist in coordinating railroad operations during day and night shifts.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
- Support the planning and execution of transportation schedules.
- Communicate effectively with team members and external partners.
- Address and resolve any operational issues that arise during shifts.
- Conduct data analysis and generate reports to improve operational efficiency.
- Participate in safety audits and inspections.
- Provide administrative support to the Transportation or Engineer Department as needed.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a relevant degree program (e.g., Transportation, Logistics, Engineering, Business).
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- A keen interest in the railroad industry and transportation logistics.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
