About the position

The South Shore Line is seeking 1 to 2 motivated and dedicated interns to join our Transportation Department. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the railroad industry, working both days and nights to support our operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in transportation logistics and engineering, safety protocols, and operational management. The South Shore Line is an equal opportunity employer. Responsibilities

  • Assist in coordinating railroad operations during day and night shifts.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
  • Support the planning and execution of transportation schedules.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and external partners.
  • Address and resolve any operational issues that arise during shifts.
  • Conduct data analysis and generate reports to improve operational efficiency.
  • Participate in safety audits and inspections.
  • Provide administrative support to the Transportation or Engineer Department as needed.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant degree program (e.g., Transportation, Logistics, Engineering, Business).
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • A keen interest in the railroad industry and transportation logistics.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
