About the position
The Transportation Mechanic position involves performing skilled mechanical repair and maintenance on District vehicles and equipment. The role requires knowledge of internal combustion engines, electronic systems, emission controls, and fuel injection systems. The mechanic must be able to efficiently diagnose and repair mechanical malfunctions and interpret mechanical and electrical diagrams and schematics.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair gasoline and light diesel trucks, buses, automobiles, and other malfunctioning motor vehicles and their systems accurately and efficiently.
- Maintain tools and work area in a clean and safe condition.
- Rebuild, replace, adjust, or overhaul engines, transmissions, differentials, ignitions, brakes, clutches, carburetors, electrical systems, fuel systems, and other mechanical assemblies.
- Use a variety of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and mechanical aids to replace and adjust bearings, adjust and replace brake shoes, pads and drums, turn engines, change oil, lubricate and service automobile equipment.
- Inspect vehicles and follow a preventive maintenance schedule.
- Repair and mount flat tires.
- Use welding equipment.
- Prepare buses for state inspection.
- Keep all vehicles and automobiles assigned to transportation full of gas/diesel fuel and oil.
- Record inspection results to include lube, oil, repairs, tires, replacement parts, etc.
- Drive school bus in case of emergency.
- Pass annual physical examination.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
Requirements
- Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of three (3) years successful experience in automotive and light diesel mechanical repair work or similar demonstrated experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain B.P. CDL License.
- Provide the necessary tools to perform assigned duties.
