The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician I. This entry-level position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, which include repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, and ditching. The role is crucial for maintaining the safety and functionality of the highways. During the winter months, the technician will also assist with plowing and salting operations, ensuring that roads remain safe for travel. This position may require overtime, especially during peak winter conditions, as the safety of the public is a top priority. In addition to the hands-on work, this position offers excellent benefits and opportunities for career development. The Agency provides a CDL training program, which is an excellent opportunity for those looking to advance their skills and career in transportation operations. Newly hired CDL and non-CDL holders who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic jobs on or after July 3, 2022, are eligible for a sign-on and retention bonus of up to $2000. This incentive reflects the agency's commitment to attracting and retaining dedicated employees. The work environment can be challenging, as duties require working in extreme outdoor weather conditions. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their scheduled hours and must be reachable by phone. The job involves working near heavy equipment and hazardous materials, and there are inherent dangers when performing tasks on the roadside. Employees must be prepared to handle emergencies such as floods, ice, and snow, and must be able to use tools and equipment commonly used for maintenance work. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is mandatory prior to operating vehicles or equipment. Overtime work is considerable, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment.
