The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, which include repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, and ditching. The role is crucial in ensuring the safety and functionality of the highways and requires a hands-on approach to maintenance tasks. During the winter months, the responsibilities expand to include assisting with plowing and salting operations, which are essential for maintaining safe driving conditions. Overtime may be required during peak winter weather events, emphasizing the need for flexibility and commitment to the job. Additionally, this position may involve assisting in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment, ensuring that all tools and machinery are in good working order for effective operation. The work environment can be challenging, as it requires the ability to withstand exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions. Employees must be prepared for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies, which may necessitate reporting to work outside of their regular schedule. The role demands physical stamina, as incumbents must be able to use various tools and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work. Safety is a priority, as there are normal dangers associated with working on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside debris. Employees may also be exposed to blood or airborne pathogens, and hazards are always present when working on roads with moving traffic. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required, and considerable overtime work is expected, particularly during the winter months, which is considered a condition of employment.
