About the position

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, including repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, and ditching. During the winter months, the technician will assist with plowing and salting, which may require overtime work. Additionally, this role may involve assisting in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment. New hires may also be eligible for a sign-on and retention bonus of up to $2000, particularly for those with CDL and non-CDL qualifications who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic roles after July 3, 2022. The starting pay for this position is $22.49 per hour as of July 14, 2024.

Responsibilities

  • Repair guardrails and maintain highway infrastructure.
  • Cut trees and brush as needed for road safety.
  • Patch roads to ensure safe driving conditions.
  • Pick litter and maintain cleanliness along highways.
  • Perform ditching to manage water flow and prevent flooding.
  • Assist with snow plowing and salting during winter months.
  • Participate in vehicle and equipment maintenance as required.

Requirements

  • One year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor, including either one season of operating a snowplow with wings or six months of operating medium or heavy equipment such as graders, excavators, and backhoes.
  • Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
  • Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.
