About the position

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II to join our dedicated team in West Dummerston, Vermont. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and functionality of our highways. The technician will be responsible for a variety of tasks that are essential for highway maintenance, including but not limited to repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking up litter, and performing ditching operations. These responsibilities are vital to ensuring that our roadways remain safe and accessible for all users. During the winter months, the Transportation Operations Technician II will also assist with snow plowing and salting operations, which are critical for maintaining safe driving conditions. This role may require considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies, emphasizing the need for flexibility and commitment to the job. Additionally, the technician may assist in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment, ensuring that all tools and machinery are in good working order. Newly hired CDL and non-CDL holders who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic jobs on or after July 3, 2022, are eligible for a sign-on and retention bonus of up to $2000. The starting pay for this position is $22.49 per hour as of July 14, 2024, reflecting the value we place on our employees' contributions to the agency's mission.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Ability to withstand exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions.
  • Availability for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or emergencies.
  • Ability to use tools and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols when working near heavy equipment and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to respond to work outside of scheduled hours and be reachable by phone.
