About the position

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II to join their dedicated team in Chester, Vermont. This permanent, full-time position involves a variety of tasks related to highway maintenance, including but not limited to repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, and ditching. During the winter months, the technician will assist with plowing and salting operations, which may require considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. The role demands physical endurance and the ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions. The technician must be available for overtime and be reachable by phone outside of regular work hours. This position also offers a CDL training program, providing opportunities for career development within the agency. In addition to the core responsibilities, the Transportation Operations Technician II will be expected to operate various types of heavy equipment safely and efficiently. The incumbent will be exposed to normal dangers associated with maintenance work, including working near heavy equipment and hazardous materials. Participation in a random drug and alcohol testing program is mandatory, and the technician must be able to lift materials and use tools commonly found in maintenance work. Responsibilities

  • Assist with highway maintenance tasks such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, and picking litter.
  • Perform ditching and other related maintenance activities.
  • Operate snowplows and assist with salting during winter months.
  • Be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or emergencies.
  • Use tools and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work.
  • Report to work outside of regular schedule when necessary.

Requirements

  • One year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor, including either one season of operating a snowplow with wings or six months of operating medium or heavy equipment.
  • Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
  • Must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.
