About the position

The Transportation Safety, Health & Environment Specialist IV at AECOM is responsible for evaluating and implementing safety, health, and environmental programs that comply with OSHA and government regulations. This role involves working on VDOT-related projects, conducting safety audits, and leading safety initiatives to mitigate risks and enhance safety performance. The position offers a hybrid work arrangement, combining remote work with some travel, and is based out of Virginia Beach, VA.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and implement SH&E programs and procedures to meet or exceed OSHA and government compliance requirements.
  • Attend VDOT project meetings and assist with safety planning and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  • Mitigate hazards and associated risks to reduce work-related injuries and costs from incidents.
  • Monitor corporate and regional safety programs and continuously improve safety performance.
  • Maintain knowledge of OSHA regulations and current issues.
  • Develop and implement safety training materials and programs.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal recordkeeping and reporting requirements.
  • Manage employee injuries and coordinate with relevant contacts including workers' compensation and HR.
  • Investigate and document incidents and near misses, conducting injury reviews to determine root causes.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits, reporting results and recommending improvements.
  • Lead the Safety Committee and Project Incident Investigations.
  • Provide technical safety consulting services for project initiatives.
  • Conduct new employee project orientation and training.
  • Identify safety challenges on VDOT projects and coordinate safety recognition programs.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on project inspections and assist in hazard prevention.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 6 years of experience in safety, health, and/or environment, or equivalent experience/education.
  • Ability to travel to other facilities using an AECOM provided vehicle.
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Records for positions with driving responsibilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience leading safety in a large, diverse team across a wide geography.
  • Advanced safety certifications (ASP, CSP, STS, CHST, SCTPP).
  • 10 Hour OSHA Certification preferred.
  • Experience with state or federal transportation agencies, highway construction, or emergency management.
  • Experience applying technological solutions to work zone safety.
