The Transportation Systems Operator I & II positions are critical roles within the Department of Transportation's Highways Division, specifically located at the new Joint Traffic Management Center (JTMC) in Downtown Honolulu. These positions involve a combination of training and independent responsibilities related to the operation of traffic control systems and emergency response activities. The Transportation Systems Operator I will receive training in the operating policies and procedures for the transportation control center, focusing on normal surveillance and emergency response activities. This role includes operating various traffic control and telecommunications equipment under close supervision. As the operator gains experience, they will perform progressively responsible surveillance and emergency response activities, ensuring the safety and efficiency of traffic movement in the area. On the other hand, the Transportation Systems Operator II will take on more independent responsibilities, maintaining surveillance of traffic and other activities via closed circuit television monitors and electronic sensor equipment. This role requires the operator to respond to traffic and security incidents by executing traffic control changes and notifying appropriate agencies such as police, fire, and ambulance services. The operator will also log shift incidents and make decisions in unusual or emergency situations, all while adhering to established policies and procedures. This position demands a high level of attention to detail and the ability to act swiftly and effectively in response to various traffic conditions and emergencies.
