About the position

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. Salary Grade: NC04 / Salary Range: $31,200.00 - $52,813.00 - All recommended salaries are based on each applicant's qualifying education and related experience in combination with the position's budgeted salary. The maximum hiring rate for this position is $44,563. This is an extended posting through December 6, 2024, for Transportation Worker I positions in Division 12, Gaston County. Multiple Transportation Worker I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our Transportation Worker I vacancies in each respective county during this time frame. However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a Transportation Worker I position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Operation of standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment utilized in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features.
  • Inspecting and ensuring work zone safety.
  • Participating in snow & ice removal.
  • Flagging and assisting with maintenance/repair project completion.
  • Assisting paint crews and erecting road signs.
  • Operating hand tools for sign installation and replacement.
  • Vegetation control and debris removal.
  • Assisting in grass and wildflower installation and maintenance.
  • Assisting with carpentry, welding, steel fabrication or concrete work activities.

Requirements

  • Experience operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, compactor, jackhammer, etc.
  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.
  • Experience performing manual labor.
  • High school education or General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained within 360 days of the date of hire.
