About the position

The Transporter position at Houston Methodist Hospital is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of acute, intensive, and critical care patients throughout the medical center. This role supports the interprofessional team in delivering high-quality patient care during transit, ensuring patient safety and comfort while moving patients to various diagnostic and therapeutic areas. The Transporter also assists in preventing patient falls and communicates effectively with nursing staff and other departments.

Responsibilities

  • Transport acute, intensive, and critical care patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds.
  • Assist with patient safety by retrieving equipment and moving patients to prevent falls.
  • Communicate with nursing and imaging departments regarding transport delays and patient needs.
  • Document assignments and interactions according to department protocols.
  • Train and orient new transporters on procedures and equipment usage.
  • Maintain transport equipment and ensure it is stored properly after use.
  • Dispose of soiled linen and other items appropriately during transport duties.
  • Report observations and conditions of patients to licensed personnel for safety and quality care.
  • Disinfect transport equipment before and after use to ensure hygiene standards are met.
  • Participate in performance improvement projects and continuing education for personal growth.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education preferred.
  • One year of customer service, patient transportation, or nursing aid experience preferred.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Demonstrated skills and competencies necessary for safe job performance.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English for effective communication.
  • Knowledge of safety measures related to stretchers, wheelchairs, and IV equipment.
  • Understanding of infection control and safety procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting is a plus.
  • Familiarity with patient transport protocols and equipment.
