About the position

The Trauma Program Registrar II plays a crucial role at a Level I Trauma Center, responsible for the collection, completion, and verification of patient data for the Trauma Registry. This position involves maintaining clinical and statistical data, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines, and interacting with regulatory agencies to support the hospital's accreditation as a Verified Level 1 Trauma Center. The registrar's work is essential for quality improvement, research, and monitoring trends in trauma care.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor Emergency Department and Trauma Team activations to identify trauma patients for registry criteria.
  • Identify diagnostic, operative, procedural, and pertinent patient data from medical records.
  • Perform concurrent/retrospective abstraction from outside organizations for trauma data.
  • Compile trauma registry data as required by ACS and produce quality improvement reports.
  • Accurately assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes and determine appropriate disease sequencing.
  • Maintain the computerized Trauma Registry system and ensure data accuracy.
  • Prepare monthly and annual statistics and reports for quality improvement and research.
  • Participate in research projects related to the trauma program.
  • Maintain knowledge of national and local trauma data dictionaries.
  • Verify completeness of medical records and report discrepancies.
  • Interact with medical staff for documentation clarification.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Medical Record Sciences with RHIT or RHIA certification required.
  • Two years of inpatient or hospital coding experience, or one year at a Level I Trauma hospital.
  • One year of ICD-10-CM and PCS coding experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, and coding systems.
  • Intermediate computer skills for data input and spreadsheet creation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) within three years of hire.
  • Completion of AIS Scoring Course and Trauma Registry Course within one year of hire.
