About the position

The Trauma Registrar is responsible for the comprehensive review and accurate abstraction of trauma patient records, ensuring data integrity for the PA Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) and supporting trauma patient care management. This role involves maintaining the Trauma Registry database, performing data analysis, report writing, and contributing to performance improvement initiatives within the trauma services team. The position is primarily remote after orientation, with full-time hours from Monday to Friday and very rare weekend opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform concurrent in-house trauma record abstraction and interpret clinical data for accurate entry into the trauma database.
  • Generate and analyze concurrent data reports in response to Trauma Service requests or self-directed processes.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of all patient data in the Trauma Registry.
  • Accurately assign applicable ICD-9-CM codes for all injury descriptors and procedures found in the trauma patient medical record.
  • Determine optimal AIS score for injuries.
  • Utilize ICD-9-CM coding books, Tricode software, Abbreviated Injury Scale scoring book, and encoder effectively.
  • Conform to PTSF requirements for Accredited Trauma Center participation in the state registry.
  • Participate in Trauma Service performance improvement initiatives by providing expertise with data retrieval and manipulation.
  • Analyze data and provide information ensuring customer requirements are met using reports and graphics.
  • Act as system administrator for the Trauma Registry, ensuring timely updates, enhancements, and system back-up.
  • Independently troubleshoot hardware and software system problems as they arise.
  • Identify patients for inclusion in the Trauma Registry database based on established criteria.
  • Identify PTSF qualifiers and audit filters and assure timely submission of data to the PA Trauma Systems Foundation.
  • Maintain an accurate trauma patient log.
  • Plan, identify, trend, analyze, and integrate new data collection elements for trauma patient care management and performance improvement.
  • Proficiently write reports utilizing trauma registry data.
  • Attend and participate in required PTSF and hospital education sessions.
  • Participate on trauma-related committees and inter-rater reliability reviews.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience as an Allied Health professional.
  • Working knowledge of ICD-9-CM and personal computer.
  • Typing skills and statistical abilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Completion of certificate/degree in Allied Health profession.
  • Knowledge of quality care audit procedures.
