About the position

The Tree Trimmer (Apprentice) position at Wright Tree Service is an entry-level role focused on tree trimming and removal. The position requires participation in a registered Apprenticeship Program through the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC). The apprentice will learn essential skills for safely trimming and removing trees, operating equipment, and ensuring safety protocols are followed in various weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Trims and/or removes trees by climbing with the aid of a ladder, safety belt, climbing line, or powered trimmer lift truck.
  • Cuts branches or trunk sections and lowers them to the ground with lines.
  • Uses appropriate tools to fell trees or trim trunks and split them into manageable pieces.
  • Sprays stumps and brush with hand-spraying equipment to prevent further growth.
  • Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris, and feeds brush into a wood chipper.
  • Repairs slight damage to lawns, fences, and walks caused by tree trimming.
  • Relays hand-signals, directs traffic, and operates trucks and equipment as assigned.
  • Trains new employees on proper procedures.
  • Safeguards employees and the public from hazards in and around the work area.
  • Sets up barriers, warning signs, and flags to protect employees and the public.
  • Performs tree and bucket rescue as trained.
  • Inspects and maintains tools, trucks, and other work equipment.
  • Works around hazardous equipment and in close proximity to energized power lines.
  • Maintains cleanliness and mechanical order of trucks, chippers, and equipment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 months experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews or completion of applicable performance reviews.
  • Ability to enforce on-the-job safety practices.
  • Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times per day.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work tasks.
  • Must be able to read, write, and comprehend written and verbal job instructions/information.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with others.
  • Ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds infrequently and up to 30 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies, including holidays and weekends.
  • Ability to operate and service all required tools and equipment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Maintains a herbicide applicator or operator's certification and license as required.
  • Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards.
  • Must complete and pass a Climber Trainee Performance Review.
