About the position

The Tribal Liaison position at Bering Land Bridge National Preserve involves serving as a key point of contact between the National Park Service and various tribal entities. The role focuses on building and maintaining relationships with tribes, communities, and stakeholders to promote cultural and environmental initiatives. The position requires collaboration on community engagement projects and coordination of tribal consultations, ensuring that indigenous perspectives are integrated into park management and programs.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Tribal Liaison and Community Engagement Coordinator for the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve Shared Beringian Heritage Program (BERI).
  • Build and maintain relationships with tribes, tribal consortia, communities, Alaska Native Corporations, and educational institutions.
  • Lead and develop community engagement projects to increase involvement and collaboration.
  • Coordinate tribal, environmental, cultural, and natural resource events to promote program goals.
  • Manage the Beringia Working Group and plan annual meetings to keep stakeholders informed about BERI programs.
  • Develop strategies for tribal engagement and coordinate tribal consultations on cooperative agreements.
  • Create outreach activities to facilitate a diverse range of applicants for the BERI Program Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA).

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Alaska Native Tribes, Corporations, and Tribal Organizations customs and politics, specifically related to ANCSA and ANILCA.
  • Broad-based knowledge of Arctic conservation, indigenous ecological knowledge, and issues affecting indigenous peoples.
  • Understanding of cultural transmission and the relationship between living beings and their environment.
  • Ability to communicate information in culturally sensitive ways to diverse audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with federal agencies and understanding of federal regulations regarding tribal consultation.
  • Familiarity with environmental and cultural resource management practices in Alaska.
