About the position

The TRIO Project Coordinator at Texas Southern University is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of the TRIO program's daily operations. This role involves working closely with program staff, college employees, and community stakeholders to provide essential services to potential program participants, particularly focusing on academic, personal, and career counseling for low-income and first-generation college students.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as point of contact for students, campus faculty and staff, and other parties seeking support or information about the TRIO Program.
  • Create, develop, and implement career-readiness workshops, events, and field trips, as well as collegiate, scholarship, financial, and leadership workshops both virtually and in-person.
  • Create and implement a strategic plan for student retention to meet critical grant objectives.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the TRIO program, ensuring efficient management of activities and resources.
  • Attend TRIO staff meetings and meet regularly with the Program Director to review program goals, activities, and priorities.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating educational program activities for all program participants.
  • Provide comprehensive academic, personal, career, and financial aid counseling to each project participant.
  • Assess and document the academic and motivational needs of students selected for participation in program activities.
  • Plan and implement daily academic programming regarding preparation for graduate school, including applications and guidance for undergraduate research projects.
  • Maintain resources for students through program offices, including academic tutoring, research presentations, graduate school preparation, financial literacy, academic advising, and FAFSA preparation assistance.
  • Monitor and document the academic progress of participants each semester.
  • Provide and input essential participant data for the annual performance report.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred (M.A. or M.Ed.) in education, social work, or related fields from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of two years in staff supervision and program development.
  • Minimum of three years' experience with Federal TRIO programs assisting disadvantaged, low-income, and first-generation pre-college students.
  • Experience coordinating project programming and field experiences.
  • Experience advising and assisting students with the college admissions and financial aid process.
  • Knowledge of TRIO Department of Education policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of academic advising and college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy activities for low-income and potential first-generation college youth.

Nice-to-haves

  • Valid Texas Driver's License preferred.
  • Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting Project Participants.
  • Formal training and/or work experience promoting the completion of a rigorous secondary school program of study.
  • Formal training and/or work experience increasing post-secondary enrollment rates and promoting college degree attainment rates for low-income and potential first-generation college students.
