About the position

The Truancy Officer plays a crucial role in monitoring and improving student attendance within the SAU 6 Public Schools district. This position involves working closely with students, families, and school staff to address barriers to attendance and ensure that students receive the support they need to attend school regularly. The officer will also be responsible for maintaining detailed records, preparing reports, and participating in professional development to enhance their skills in truancy prevention and intervention.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and track student attendance and tardiness across the school district on a daily basis.
  • Conduct home visits and meet with students and parents/guardians of chronically absent or tardy students to understand the causes and provide support.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, counselors, and social workers to identify and address barriers to regular school attendance.
  • Develop and implement attendance improvement plans for chronically absent or tardy students.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community resources to connect students and families with services that can help improve attendance.
  • Maintain detailed records and documentation of all attendance-related interventions, communications, and outcomes.
  • Prepare and present attendance data reports to school administrators and the district on a regular basis.
  • Testify in court proceedings related to truancy, as needed.
  • Stay up-to-date on all relevant laws, regulations, and best practices related to student attendance and truancy.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in truancy prevention and intervention strategies.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of experience working with youth, families, and community organizations.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in data tracking, analysis, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and social services.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Familiarity with New Hampshire laws regarding truancy and attendance policies.
