About the position

The Truss Designer position involves creating detailed truss placement plans and design drawings for a leading building materials company in Charleston, South Carolina. The role requires a strong understanding of blueprints and structural design specifications, as well as effective communication with customers and sales staff to clarify technical aspects of projects. The designer will also be responsible for reviewing designs to minimize errors and ensuring that all safety procedures are followed in the workplace.

Responsibilities

• Produces floor and roof truss placement plans, truss design drawings, and truss quotes based on blueprints and customer requirements.
• Determines design specifications based on blueprints and structural design needs.
• Reviews other designers' work as part of a double-check system to reduce design errors before manufacturing.
• Creates optimized shop paperwork for manufacturing efficiency.
• Communicates with customers and sales staff on technical aspects of plans requiring clarification.
• Documents communication with customers, architects, or engineers using Excel spreadsheets and saved emails.
• Consults with experienced component technicians and management for in-depth analysis when necessary.
• Plans and paces work efficiently to meet productivity goals.
• Understands and observes all safety procedures to prevent injury; attends safety meetings and recommends improvements.

Requirements

• Proficiency in MiTek and/or Alpine software is required.
• Strong attention to detail and knowledge of company products for appropriate structural applications.
• Basic math and measurement skills.
• Knowledge of drafting, architectural design, or CAD applications.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints and architectural drawings.
