About the position

The Trust Accounting Manager at the Department of Retirement Services is responsible for leading and directing cash receipting and defined contribution activities for Washington State's public employees' retirement funds. This role involves overseeing the Trust Accounting Team to ensure accurate accounting of retirement funds, managing significant annual contributions, and maintaining relationships with key financial partners. The position emphasizes leadership, strategic guidance, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion within the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction for all agency cash reporting operations.
  • Serve as the key advisor on cash handling, ensuring financial resources are safeguarded through precise accounting.
  • Plan, lead, organize, control, and direct the work of the Trust Accounting team for effective cash receipting and accounting.
  • Enhance team effectiveness through performance appraisals and professional development opportunities.
  • Manage the collection of approximately $6 billion annually in retirement contributions and transfer over $1.25 billion annually in defined contributions.
  • Direct cash flow communications and quarterly projections for the agency's trust funds to facilitate maximized investment of retirement trust funds.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the State Investment Board, State Treasurer's Office, and agency's record keeper.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of full-time experience overseeing a professional accounting program.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or closely allied field may substitute for up to two (2) years of experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience providing supportive leadership for a high performing team.
  • Demonstrated experience with the state's Agency Financial Reporting System (AFRS) is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets).
  • Strong customer focus and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to analyze documents and information closely to assess and understand issues.
  • Experience in leading others and fostering a motivating work environment.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated fiscal accountability and ethical conduct.

Nice-to-haves
