About the position

The Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) is seeking a passionate researcher to join the Traffic Operations & Roadway Safety Division at our headquarters in Bryan, Texas. The successful candidate will conduct research for various clients, including federal, state, and local government agencies, transportation industries, and non-governmental organizations. The focus will be on the Roadway Safety Program, particularly concerning the safety of automated, connected, and electric vehicles, as well as vulnerable road users. The role involves data collection and analysis of crash and surrogate safety measures using statistical, spatial, econometric models, and machine learning tools. The candidate will collaborate with other programs within TTI and have opportunities to work on interdisciplinary teams across the Texas A&M University system. The candidate will serve as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, or a significant lead in research and proposal development, guided by senior researchers. Responsibilities include literature review, planning research activities, data coordination and collection, data analysis, report writing, and preparing presentations. The role also involves supervising staff and students, traveling for research, and field data collection. Continued employment is contingent upon funding availability and satisfactory performance.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research through data collection, analysis, coordination, and supervision.
  • Report preparation including compiling, documenting, and presenting results.
  • Project management to ensure completion of research objectives and timely delivery of project deliverables.
  • Proposal preparation for externally funded research projects, serving as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI.
  • Research presentations to sponsors and at academic or conference settings.
  • Interact with sponsors and potential clients.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Engineering or related fields.
  • 3 years related work experience.
  • Experience with developing traffic safety models and conducting exploratory and predictive analysis of crash data.
  • Demonstrated understanding of research methods and data analysis techniques.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, R, Python, ArcGIS and other data management and analysis tools.
  • Ability to multi-task, be flexible, and exhibit a positive attitude in the workplace.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of technical competence.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in Engineering or related field.
  • Ability to use surrogates as a measure of road safety.
  • Experience in Safe Systems approach and Complete Streets projects.
  • Experience with connected and automated vehicles and their impact on safety.
  • Previous experience in data mining with machine learning algorithms.
  • Proficient with Azure cloud computing environment and Tableau.
  • Publications in related field.
  • Valid driver's license.
