About the position

The Tutor position at Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) involves working on various campuses and online to facilitate learning among students in specific subject areas. Tutors play a crucial role in helping students understand course material and develop essential college skills such as time management and study techniques. This position allows for both face-to-face and virtual interactions, providing flexibility in how tutoring is delivered. Tutors are expected to establish rapport with students, creating a supportive learning environment that encourages academic success. Tutors will work under the guidance of the Area Tutoring Coordinator and the Tutoring Coordinator, collaborating to determine office hours and scheduling tutoring sessions. Responsibilities include facilitating small group exercises, demonstrating concepts, and assisting students in utilizing technology effectively, such as MS Word and Blackboard. Additionally, tutors will help students access other resources, such as counseling and disability support, ensuring they receive comprehensive assistance tailored to their needs. The role requires tutors to complete annual training and be adaptable in their approach to meet the diverse needs of students. This position is part-time and temporary, with a maximum of 20 hours per week, and is open to students from various BCTC campuses, including Lexington, Danville, Lawrenceburg, Winchester, and Georgetown.

Responsibilities

  • Establish rapport with students who utilize Tutoring Services.
  • Work according to Area Tutor Coordinator and Tutoring Coordinator guidance to provide support for students.
  • Help facilitate small group exercises or discussions such as peer review.
  • Demonstrate a concept to a student or group of students.
  • Assist students in learning how to effectively utilize technology such as MS Word, Blackboard, and library databases.
  • Assist students with accessing or providing referrals to other resources they may need (Counseling, Disability Support, Student Engagement, etc.).
  • Schedule and facilitate tutoring sessions with students who require additional support.
  • Complete annual training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Successful completion of the course you wish to tutor in or equivalent with a grade of A, or a faculty recommendation letter.
  • 3.0 College GPA or letter of recommendation from an instructor.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous tutoring experience
  • Flexible in the assistance they provide to students
  • Preference given to current BCTC students as well as those with a teacher recommendation
  • Skilled in interpersonal communication and a good understanding of conversational nuances
  • Ability to navigate online platforms to facilitate virtual tutoring
  • Able to tutor in multiple subjects.

Benefits

  • Salary based on education level: $13.00 per hour for less than Bachelor's degree, $15.00 per hour for Bachelor's degree or higher.
