About the position

The UAS Operator is responsible for providing airborne support to police operations and enhancing public safety in Tuscaloosa. This role aims to increase officer safety, reduce response times, and improve the quality of life for citizens. The operator will assist in resource deployment for crime prevention and investigation, utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for various public safety operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform collection, collation, research, and analysis of crime information using various databases and software.
  • View and analyze public safety calls, crime and fire scene videos, and assist investigating officers as needed.
  • Cooperate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies during investigations.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable laws and new standards in crime intelligence technology.
  • Assist with special projects and perform clerical tasks such as data entry and correspondence.
  • Collaborate with forensic analysts and law enforcement to recover and analyze digital evidence.
  • Evaluate and become proficient with new forensic or analytic tools and methods.
  • Prepare clear and comprehensive notes and reports; testify in judicial proceedings.
  • Monitor and implement advanced camera systems for real-time intelligence.
  • Conduct online and open source intelligence collection to support law enforcement.
  • Operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for public safety operations.
  • Ensure compliance with FAA regulations and maintain logs of UAS flights.
  • Provide drone photography and videography services to other city departments.
  • Provide IT support for the assigned department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public safety, or related field preferred; high school diploma or GED required.
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification preferred; must obtain within six months of hire.
  • Comprehensive understanding of FAA regulations and legal requirements for UAS operations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to remain calm in high-stress situations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in law enforcement or public safety operations.
  • Familiarity with forensic analysis and digital evidence recovery.
