About the position

Canonical is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the engineering team responsible for delivering essential components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, runtimes, toolchains, and networking and storage management. This role is pivotal in driving Ubuntu's development and requires a deep understanding of Linux and Ubuntu, along with exceptional leadership skills. The Engineering Manager will work in a fast-paced, technical environment, guiding a distributed team and collaborating with cross-functional leadership to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a team of distributed engineers
  • Demonstrate sound engineering principles through active and hands-on leadership
  • Be responsible for planning, estimation, and execution
  • Work with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leadership teams
  • Drive the advancement and adoption of the latest software development practices
  • Design, embrace, and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices
  • Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with company values
  • Engage with other teams at Canonical to ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps
  • Work from home while meeting in person for company sprints.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience with Linux distributions
  • Experience with packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm, other)
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers
  • High-quality software engineering knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot process, Java/GCC/Python/Rust/Go toolchains, ARM and/or RISC-V
  • Engagement with open source communities and processes
