About the position

The UI Claims Examiner Bankruptcy Specialist plays a crucial role in administering the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act, focusing on the collection of overpayments of unemployment benefits. This position involves investigating claims, communicating with claimants and attorneys, and managing bankruptcy inquiries, all while maintaining a professional demeanor and providing empathetic support to individuals in difficult situations. The role allows for occasional telework after training, emphasizing a balance between in-office and remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the provisions of the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act regarding collections of overpayment of unemployment benefits.
  • Perform routine to advanced UI claims account investigations in the Finance Division, Collections & Civil Actions Dept.
  • Examine claimants' UI records and reports to secure collection of delinquent benefit overpayments.
  • Issue past-due notices and review UI benefit rulings as part of enforcement actions.
  • Learn basic bankruptcy principles, specifically dealing with Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 filings.
  • Review electronic bankruptcy records through PACER and document bankruptcy data in the agency database.
  • Be the initial point of contact for all bankruptcy inquiries from within the agency and from claimants/debtors and their attorneys.
  • Respond to external and internal communications and provide accurate information regarding overpayments and collection actions.
  • Keep reports and production documentation up to date based on management directives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time experience in gathering information, interviewing, counseling, or interpreting policies in a public or private enterprise for UI Claims Examiner I.
  • Three years of full-time experience for UI Claims Examiner II.
  • Four years of full-time experience for UI Claims Examiner III.
  • Relevant academic credits may be applied toward experience qualifications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Six months to one year of experience in a customer call center environment or with TWC UI Benefits computer system.
  • Experience in skip-tracing, investigations, or collections.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including business letter composition.
  • Knowledge of MS Office applications, specifically Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
