About the position

The Student Broadcasting Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) position at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is designed for Communication Arts students who are eager to gain hands-on experience in the field of broadcasting. This role involves writing, filming, and editing news stories that will be featured in live broadcasts, on the university's website, and across various social media platforms. The MMJ serves as a vital part of UIWtv, the university's student broadcasting service, and is expected to promote education while providing reliable and engaging coverage of campus news, sports, and events. As a Communication Arts Student Officer for UIWtv, the MMJ will manage the daily operations of the broadcasting service, learning to navigate real-life production challenges. This position not only offers the opportunity to develop technical skills in video production and editing but also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and mentorship among students. The MMJ will be responsible for creating news packages and voiceovers, utilizing tools such as PremierePro and various camera equipment. This role is ideal for students looking to enhance their journalism skills in a supportive and dynamic environment. The position requires a commitment to the university's values and adherence to all applicable rules and regulations, including those set forth by the NCAA. The MMJ will report directly to the Communication Arts Program Coordinator and will be expected to perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of UIWtv and the university's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Write, film, and edit news stories for live broadcasts, website, and social media.
  • Promote education and serve as a reliable source of campus news, sports, and events.
  • Manage daily operations of UIWtv.
  • Learn and navigate real-life production challenges.
  • Create news packages and voiceovers using PremierePro and camera equipment.
  • Mentor fellow students and work effectively with diverse communities.

Requirements

  • Full-time UIW Communication Arts student.
  • Ability to shoot, write, and edit news packages and VO/SOTS.
  • Knowledge of PremierePro and camera equipment.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Team player with a willingness to help mentor students.

Nice-to-haves

  • Successful completion of COMM 3395 TV Practicum or COMM 3353 Broadcast Journalism.
  • Experience as on-air talent for TV.
