About the position

The Undergraduate/Graduate Intern in Transportation Data Logging and Analysis at NREL will support the Technical Assistance for Clean Transportation (TACT) group in collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on advanced technology vehicles, particularly school and transit buses. This role involves working with experimental data captured from onboard data logging devices, validating models, and providing analysis support to enhance the understanding of vehicle behavior in fleets across the country. The intern will engage in data collection, analysis, and technical reporting, contributing to the development and deployment of clean transportation technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and analyze data on school and transit buses operating in the field.
  • Install and operate onboard vehicle data acquisition equipment.
  • Perform analysis through simulation and modeling.
  • Visualize data and provide support in laboratory test activities.
  • Analyze experimental data using existing Matlab-based tools/models and Python code.
  • Assist in writing technical reports and case studies, as well as presentations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor's degree program from an accredited institution.
  • Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor's degree within the past 12 months.
  • Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master's degree program from an accredited institution.
  • Post Graduate: Earned a master's degree within the past 12 months.
  • Graduate + PhD: Completed master's degree and enrolled as a PhD student from an accredited institution.
  • Understanding of the Python coding language.
  • Experience with computer programming and application of computer models.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Python, and/or Matlab as numerical analysis tools.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Skills in MATLAB, Python, and Excel.
  • Understanding of physics/dynamics and analysis of experimental data.
  • Vehicle testing and instrumentation experience.
  • Knowledge of OBD CAN signals and GPS.
  • Previous experience with programming raspberry-pi computers.
