About the position

The Undergraduate Student Research Assistant at New College of Florida supports faculty and graduate students in technical, classwork, and research activities. This part-time position requires a diverse skill set to assist in various tasks, including technical support, laboratory setup, and research assistance, while providing a valuable learning experience for the student.

Responsibilities

  • Consulting with personnel regarding the purchasing of A/V equipment
  • Laboratory setup and preparation of lab activities
  • Providing technical support for professors' computers
  • Converting video files to different formats to DVD
  • Formatting manuscripts for journal publication
  • Updating software on lab computers
  • Submitting Help Desk tickets to IT for lab computers
  • Maintaining a collection of equipment for loan to students/faculty
  • Assisting students with software for homework
  • Troubleshooting software issues for students/faculty
  • Liaison between MMS and data collection sites
  • Providing lectures on recording and analysis of dolphin and manatee vocalizations
  • Teaching students sound analysis techniques
  • Assisting thesis students as needed
  • Compiling data and datasheets for students
  • Serving as proctor in the absence of a professor
  • Conducting literature searches on various topics
  • Searching for curriculum design policies at other schools
  • Running statistical analysis on collected data
  • Recording manatees, dolphins, and other animals
  • Conducting extensive dolphin vocalization analysis
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a New College of Florida undergraduate student
  • Familiarity with experimental design and the research process
  • Scientific research skills
  • Statistical skills, preferably with SAS and/or SPSS
  • Experience with APA-style formatting
  • Experience troubleshooting basic computer issues
  • General familiarity with technology
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
