The Underground Mine Technician/Geologist plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of underground mining operations at multiple room and pillar limestone mines. This position is primarily focused on conducting technical fieldwork that involves close collaboration with geotechnical staff to gather and share vital information with management. The objective is to facilitate safe, timely, and proactive decision-making regarding underground mine conditions. The technician will engage in various activities such as borescoping, geotechnical data collection, and the management of ground monitoring instrumentation. Additionally, the role includes field mapping and participation in safety initiatives, as well as implementing ground control techniques to ensure compliance with both internal and federal underground mine standards. The essential functions of this position include regular borescoping and logging of the mine roof, which serves as the primary method of data collection. The technician will be responsible for organizing, managing, and filing data as required by each site, utilizing software tools like Microsoft Excel. Another key responsibility is the management of ground monitoring instrumentation, which includes tasks such as installation, repair, regular measurement, and data management of devices like telltales and borehole extensometers. The technician will also assist with mine planning initiatives and participate in regular PLS mine surveys by helping to install mine centerlines. Clear communication of key findings and necessary data to geotechnical staff, support services, and site management is essential, as is promoting Martin Marietta's safety culture and actively participating in safety initiatives. The work environment for this position is primarily underground, within a production mining setting, and involves the operation of heavy equipment such as manlifts and mining drills. The role also requires the use of standard office equipment, including computers and filing systems. Physical demands include the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, visual acuity, manual dexterity, and the ability to sit for extended periods, among other physical activities. This is a full-time position that may require long hours and occasional weekend work, with travel to job sites as needed.
