GenStar Insurance Services, LLC is a premier provider of excess, surplus, and specialty property and casualty insurance written on General Star Indemnity Company (non-admitted) and General Star National Insurance Company (admitted) paper. The GenStar companies conduct business through a select group of wholesale brokers, managing general underwriters (MGUs), and program administrators in the United States. As part of the Berkshire Hathaway Family of Companies, GenStar is positioned to offer a unique opportunity for individuals looking to start their careers in underwriting. The Underwriter Associate role is designed for those eager to learn and grow within the ever-changing Excess and Surplus (E&S) market. This position is based in our Los Angeles office and is a hybrid role, with training set to commence in the summer of 2025. The Underwriter Associate will participate in an industry-recognized training program that encompasses a wide array of underwriting and marketing functions. This program aims to equip associates with the necessary skills to manage client relationships effectively while also honing their technical underwriting abilities. Throughout the training, associates will receive support from their team, manager, and mentor, allowing them to develop essential underwriting skills. This includes utilizing proprietary tools and external resources to analyze, evaluate, and set terms and pricing for complex exposures. The role also emphasizes the importance of networking within the corporate structure, enabling associates to leverage the company's extensive resources to deliver exceptional service to clients. As part of their development, Underwriter Associates will engage in both classroom learning and hands-on experiences, progressing towards the Underwriter role. They will have opportunities to work on live accounts, cultivate their own client relationships, and deepen their understanding of the insurance industry and GenStar's commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the E&S marketplace. The position may also involve travel for client visits, industry networking events, and educational seminars, providing a comprehensive introduction to the field of underwriting.
