About the position

As an Underwriter I at Producers National, you will play a crucial role in delivering exceptional service to our customers and agency partners. This position requires you to work closely with other underwriting team members to develop and apply your knowledge of our products, underwriting practices, policies, and guidelines. Your primary goal will be to ensure a profitable book of business while maintaining high standards of customer service. You will be responsible for managing a high volume of inquiries from customers and agents, ensuring that each interaction is handled with professionalism and efficiency. In this role, you will review, document, and underwrite new and renewal policy transactions. Utilizing your independent judgment and initiative, you will support business goals by reviewing underwriting requirements and referring applications or endorsement requests for further analysis when necessary. Proper documentation of the underwriting decision-making process is essential, and you will be expected to investigate any discrepancies in the information gathered during the underwriting process. Additionally, you will take appropriate action on required reports, endorsement requests, service requests, and general correspondence. Communication is key, as you will need to interact with agents and customers to obtain necessary information for underwriting risks and to address any issues that may arise. Building and maintaining effective business relationships with agents and internal and external customers is vital to your success in this position. You will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with underwriting rules, guidelines, and governmental regulations, acting within your level of authority. As part of your duties, you may provide guidance and support to Underwriting Customer Service Representatives and Team Leads, and you will be expected to meet or exceed the Key Performance Indicators set for Underwriter I.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a high volume of customer and agent phone inquiries, while providing excellent customer service
  • Review, document, and underwrite new and renewal policy transactions
  • Use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals
  • Review underwriting requirements and refer applications, endorsement requests, or other correspondence for further underwriting analysis when outside level of authority
  • Properly document underwriting decision-making process in the appropriate system(s)
  • Investigate discrepancies in the information gathered
  • Review and take appropriate action on required reports, endorsement requests, service requests, and general correspondence
  • Review data entry for accuracy and completeness
  • Process payments and/or change payment plans, as needed
  • Communicate with agents and customers to obtain information needed to underwrite risks and address issues
  • Maintain effective business relationships with agents, as well as internal and external customers/co-workers
  • Research and respond to questions from agents and their team members
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting rules, guidelines, and governmental regulations
  • Act within level of authority
  • Within authority, provides guidance and support to the Underwriting Customer Service Representatives and Team Lead
  • Meet or exceed Underwriter I Key Performance Indicators
  • Handle special projects and performs other duties, as assigned

Requirements

  • Attention to detail while working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a friendly and professional demeanor
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Minimum 1 year experience as a Underwriting Service Assistant II or 2 years prior property and casualty insurance experience
  • High School Degree Required
  • Producers License Preferred

Nice-to-haves

  • Diamond Insurance software experience preferred, but not required
  • Bilingual - English & Spanish a plus
