About the position

The Underwriter I position at Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company is a full-time role based in Fort Wayne, IN, focused on evaluating, classifying, and pricing new and renewal church and related ministry business. This role is essential for achieving the company's growth and profitability goals while adhering to established standards. The Underwriter will work within their assigned authority to assess accounts that are small to medium in size and of minor to moderate complexity. This involves a thorough analysis of risks and exposures associated with each account, ensuring that all underwriting decisions are well-documented and communicated effectively to agents. In this role, the Underwriter will be responsible for maintaining accurate underwriting files that reflect significant actions taken, the thought process behind decisions, and detailed exposure analysis. Communication is key, as the Underwriter will need to professionally convey underwriting decisions to agents and assist them in resolving any issues related to existing policies. The position may require travel to meet with agents and policyholders, as well as attendance at conferences or training events to stay updated on industry standards and practices. The Underwriter will also be tasked with adhering to all state and federal regulations regarding the completion of new and renewal accounts. Meeting individual processing and workflow standards is crucial to ensure that agent and policyholder service needs are met efficiently. Additionally, the Underwriter will order risk control inspections as necessary and present agents with risk control guidelines when hazardous activities are identified, recommending available risk management services to enhance profitability. The role also includes contributing to the development and maintenance of the Underwriting Resource Center and completing other assigned projects as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, classify and price new and renewal church and related ministry accounts.
  • Document underwriting files to reflect significant actions taken, thought process, pricing, and exposure analysis.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions with agents in a professional manner.
  • Travel as needed to meet with agents and policyholders, and attend conferences or training events.
  • Adhere to all state and federal regulations regarding new and renewal accounts.
  • Meet individual processing/workflow standards established by the department and company management.
  • Order risk control inspections as needed.
  • Present agents with risk control guidelines and recommend risk management services.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Underwriting Resource Center.
  • Complete other projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Two to five years of general business, insurance, or related experience is required.
  • Relevant Property and Casualty underwriting experience is desired (2-5 years).
  • Completion of AU, CPCU, CIC, or other equivalent insurance-related coursework is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet basic math and professional writing competency.
  • Proficiency in using computers and business software applications is required.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations diplomatically and use negotiation skills effectively.
  • Effective communication of complex concepts both orally and in writing is essential.
  • Ability to develop creative solutions to problems and work in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a positive professional image are required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the church and related ministries market is preferred.
