About the position

The Underwriter II at HarborOne Mortgage is a critical role responsible for evaluating loan applications and making informed decisions based on the applicant's credit history, financial standing, and the strength of the collateral. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of various lending guidelines, including FHA, VA, and conventional standards. The Underwriter must have attained Direct Endorsement status from HUD and/or SARs authority from VA, ensuring they are qualified to assess and approve loans within the established parameters. The role demands exemplary customer service skills, as the Underwriter will frequently communicate loan decisions and provide guidance to Loan Officers and other staff members. In addition to making loan decisions, the Underwriter will respond to post-closing, insuring, and audit reviews promptly. They will conduct thorough analyses of loan packages to ensure compliance with company policies, investor requirements, and FHA/VA guidelines. The Underwriter will also be responsible for training and coaching Loan Officers as needed, fostering a collaborative environment within the team. A strong understanding of residential appraisals and the ability to calculate qualifying income by analyzing tax returns and financial statements are essential for success in this role. The Underwriter II will also be expected to assist the underwriting team in achieving productivity goals while meeting individual turn times for new loans and condition reviews. They will have sign-off authority on delegated loans up to agency limits and can approve loans up to $1,000,000. This position may require working outside of standard business hours to meet the demands of the job and ensure timely processing of loan applications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide loan decisions based on credit history, financial position, and collateral strength.
  • Respond to post-closing, insuring, and audit reviews in a timely manner.
  • Communicate loan decisions to appropriate parties both orally and in writing.
  • Complete a thorough analysis of loan packages for compliance with guidelines.
  • Provide training and coaching for Loan Officers as needed.
  • Assist Sales and Processing staff with interpretations and questions regarding loan files.
  • Review residential appraisals thoroughly.
  • Maintain knowledge of company, investor, and correspondent programs and requirements.
  • Calculate qualifying income by analyzing tax returns and financial statements.
  • Cross-train within the department and assume additional duties as needed.
  • Help the underwriting team achieve productivity goals while meeting individual turn times for new loans and condition reviews.
  • Sign off on delegated loans up to agency limit and loans up to $1,000,000.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Direct Endorsement status from HUD and/or SARs authority from VA is required.
  • Extensive understanding of FHA, VA, and conventional guidelines.
  • Exemplary customer service skills are essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with FHLMC, FNMA, FHA, RD, and VA guidelines is preferred.
  • Ability to work outside of standard business hours as required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a Government Underwriter is a plus.
