About the position

The Underwriting Department at Allied is responsible for applying comprehensive knowledge of the company's products, plan documents, underwriting manuals, and computer systems. This role is crucial in assessing risk and establishing pricing to ensure the profitability of both new and renewal business. The underwriter will work collaboratively within a team environment, leveraging their own expertise alongside that of their peers. A key aspect of this position is to deliver services in a positive, professional, thorough, and courteous manner, which is essential for Allied to maintain its reputation as a service-driven organization. As the voice of Allied underwriting, effective communication with Account Executives and customers is vital. The underwriter will utilize medical expertise in the overall risk evaluation and rate recommendation process. Proficiency in all functions at Levels 1, 2, and 3 is required, adhering to department quality and quantity production standards. Responsibilities include underwriting new business according to parameter guidelines, determining group eligibility for health insurance based on comprehensive reviews of eligibility information, and evaluating medical risks through various reports prepared by Level 2 underwriters. The underwriter will also conduct employer phone calls and, when necessary, contact individual applicants for additional health information or clarification. They will send out final new business rates and run any alternate quotes approved by Level 4. Additionally, the role involves creating self-funded accounts, reviewing pre-screens, health renewals, and claim referrals, as well as processing contact management and UAS mailbox activities. The underwriter will determine appropriate rates for additions on ancillary products and review recommendations from Level II on ancillary late enrollee and short-term medical rewrite applications. Meeting established department production standards for quality and quantity is essential, and management retains the discretion to modify the functions of this position at any time.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new business according to parameter guidelines and determine eligibility of a group for health insurance based on a review of all eligibility information.
  • Review Medical Load Report prepared by Level 2 and evaluate appropriate medical risk.
  • Review Participation Worksheet and Group Eligibility prepared by Level 2.
  • Review Current Carrier Bills and Renewal Rates and compare to census presented and Allied generated rates.
  • Conduct employer phone calls and contact individual applicants for additional health information and clarification as needed.
  • Send out final new business rates and run any alternate quotes approved by Level 4.
  • Create self-funded accounts in AI.
  • Review Allied and MGU Pre-Screens completed by Level 2 and make appropriate documentation to be reviewed by Level 4.
  • Review health renewals and load into spreadsheet.
  • Review and create synopsis of claim referrals to determine medical eligibility of an insured to be finalized by Level 4.
  • Review and create synopsis of IDC complaints to be finalized by Level 4.
  • Process appropriate contact management and UAS mailbox activities.
  • Determine appropriate rate for additions on ancillary products.
  • Review recommendations from Level II on ancillary late enrollee and short-term medical rewrite applications.
  • Review monthly manual dental renewals and populate spreadsheet with rating recommendations to be approved by underwriting management.
  • Quality review accuracy of dental monthly renewals.
  • Meet established department production standards for quality and quantity.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • One to two years related work experience or equivalent college education.
  • Certification in Medical Terminology I and II.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret information directly from product brochures, certificates, and insurance contracts.
  • Ability to speak, read, comprehend, and follow written and verbal English instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Basic mathematics skills.
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet company attendance requirements.
  • Ability to sit or stand at workstation for 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to withstand the stress of meeting deadlines and telephone calls from irate agents or other individuals.
  • Ability to meet departmental training, quality, and production standards.
  • Must meet all requirements listed above under Level 1 & 2.
  • Minimum 4 years of office experience or equivalent college education.
  • Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology.
  • Very strong knowledge and understanding of medical terminology.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in the insurance industry, including 1-2 years experience in group and individual medical underwriting preferred, or equivalent medical background.
