About the position

The Underwriter - Middle Market Multinational position at AXA XL is a pivotal role that focuses on providing comprehensive foreign package and controlled master program solutions to U.S.-based multinational companies. This role is integral to the Middle Market Multinational team, which aims to deliver seamless worldwide property and casualty coverage for outward international risks. The successful candidate will be responsible for building and launching the Middle Market Multinational offering in conjunction with the U.S. Middle Market business, ensuring that the underwriting process aligns with the company's strategic goals. In this position, you will manage and grow a profitable book of new business while delivering best-in-class underwriting services to clients. Your responsibilities will include underwriting new business in accordance with U.S. Middle Market goals, developing and managing underwriting strategies for target accounts, and collaborating with domestic Middle Market underwriters. You will also assist in the planning and forecasting process, monitor aggregate exposure within agreed limits, and ensure that all risks written are within the agreed appetite. Building and cultivating relationships with brokers and clients will be essential, as will supporting the design and structure of programs. The role requires a self-motivated contributor who can exercise discretion and independent judgment in the analysis and evaluation of risk. You will participate in roundtable discussions on risk assessment and provide mentorship and leadership to peers. Maintaining compliance with all internal and external underwriting guidelines and legal requirements is crucial, as is promoting the company's expertise by taking leadership roles in client and broker meetings. Overall, this position is designed for an individual who possesses a high level of technical knowledge and skills in the property and casualty insurance industry, and who can effectively communicate and build relationships within the market.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new business in accordance with US Middle Market goals.
  • Develop and manage underwriting strategies for target accounts, including cross marketing penetration and specific plans to grow company share in the Middle P&C space.
  • Help build internal strategies and guidelines related to foreign packages and controlled master programs.
  • Work cross-functionally with AXA XL Network Service Team and Operations to administer programs.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment in the analysis and evaluation of risk.
  • Participate in roundtable discussions on risk assessment and provide mentorship and leadership to peers.
  • Build and enhance relationships with brokers and clients and identify and establish new distribution relationships for the launch of Middle Market Multinational.
  • Maintain expertise with the products, services, priorities and target markets to more effectively enable clients to uncover hidden risks.
  • Promote the company's expertise by taking leadership roles in client and broker meetings to educate on risk.
  • Maintain compliance with all internal and external underwriting guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Support the business planning and forecasting process; monitor financial exposure within outlined limits; monitor premium income to ensure it remains within set limits.
  • Effectively cross-market with other AXA XL lines; meet with brokers and insureds as required.
  • Cultivate key broker relationships in the region to maintain a steady stream of business within our underwriting appetite.

Requirements

  • Some to moderate underwriting experience in International Property & Casualty.
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate a viewpoint.
  • Excellent demonstration of initiative, interpersonal skills, and a professional demeanor are critical.
  • Possess a high and extensive level of technical knowledge and skills including product & industry.
  • Able to apply business understanding and/or management experience to set direction within the segment or function.
  • Robust analytical and problem-solving skills as well as excellent sales and marketing abilities.
  • Effective existing broker relationships in the international property & casualty space.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills combined with an excellent work ethic.
  • Ability to develop and understand business processes, strategy and planning.
  • Knowledge of functionality of systems.
