In this position, the Health Underwriter is responsible for collecting and reviewing customer-specific information, including existing group medical plans, rates, employee census, carrier history, and previous claim experience. This thorough review ensures that submissions are complete and accurate. The Health Underwriter collaborates with sales and support teams to ensure that all necessary collateral for quoting is received. The ability to quickly and clearly communicate any missing items or discrepancies is vital for success in this role. The Health Underwriter will calculate rates for complex group cases based on a detailed analysis of the group's experience, industry, location, size, and demographic nature, employing various underwriting methodologies. Additionally, the role requires the development of judgment to assess new business for master medical plans, often in collaboration with senior underwriters or management. The Health Underwriter must also review and complete all sales requests and inquiries in accordance with company standards and policy guidelines, ensuring that all underwriting systems are updated appropriately. Knowledge sharing and education are also key components of this role, as the Health Underwriter will provide underwriting knowledge to peers and members of the sales team. Familiarity with plan offerings, internal relationships, underwriting guidelines, processes, and the company's business strategy is essential. The position demands a detail-oriented individual who can switch tasks quickly and manage multiple incoming requests in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and review customer-specific information such as existing group medical plans and rates, employee census, carrier history, and previous claim experience to ensure submission completion and accuracy.
  • Work with Sales and support teams to ensure all collateral required for quoting is received.
  • Calculate rates for complex group cases based on thorough analysis of the group's experience, industry, location, size, and demographic nature using underwriting methodologies.
  • Develop judgment to assess new business for master medical plans as needed while working with senior underwriters or management.
  • Review and complete all sales requests and inquiries within company established standards and policy guidelines.
  • Update all underwriting systems as appropriate.
  • Provide underwriting knowledge sharing and education to peers and/or members of the sales team.
  • Review and become familiar with plan offerings, internal relationships, underwriting and team guidelines, processes, and procedures, company business strategy and organization.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required; Associates degree preferred or comparable experience.
  • 2+ years of insurance carrier underwriting experience preferred.
  • 2+ years of PEO underwriting experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with office environment.
