About the position

The position at EMC involves providing strategic insight and direction for the underwriting organization, specifically focusing on Commercial General Liability and Commercial Umbrella lines of business. The role requires leading the development and execution of complex products and programs, acting as a strategic partner for branches, and ensuring effective communication of underwriting recommendations. The individual will also be responsible for overseeing ISO and proprietary rules and forms, analyzing premium and loss data, and developing training programs for underwriting staff.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic insight and direction for underwriting organization for assigned lines of business.
  • Lead, research, and coordinate the execution and development of complex products and programs.
  • Act as a strategic partner for branches and corporate departments.
  • Develop new product ideas and review existing coverage language.
  • Administer and oversee ISO and proprietary rules and forms for Commercial General Liability and Commercial Umbrella.
  • Review proposed changes in ISO and proprietary rules, rates, and forms.
  • Identify, prepare, and present underwriting training opportunities and programs.
  • Communicate underwriting recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Provide strategy and direction for companywide strategic initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a business or insurance-related field or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Ten years of experience with commercial property and casualty underwriting, including at least three years of staff underwriting experience.
  • Insurance certifications such as CPCU, AU, or CIC preferred.
  • Exceptional knowledge of countrywide underwriting techniques, terminology, policies, and forms.
  • Strong underwriting judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and independently, demonstrating problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong computer knowledge, Internet, and keyboarding skills.
  • Knowledge of facultative reinsurance placement practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Strong knowledge of retrospective rating, large risk alternative rating, and large deductibles.
