About the position
The Unemployment Insurance Referee position at the NYS Department of Labor involves conducting hearings and rendering decisions related to unemployment insurance claims. This role is part of the NY HELPS program, which allows for non-competitive appointments under specific qualifications. Referees will evaluate factual information and apply relevant laws to make determinations for claimants or employers appealing initial decisions regarding unemployment benefits.
Responsibilities
- Conduct hearings related to unemployment insurance claims.
- Evaluate factual information and render written decisions in accordance with New York State Unemployment Insurance Law.
- Review and analyze records and files for cases on appeal if assigned to the Appeals Section.
- Prepare summaries of cases and author appeal decisions for the Board.
Requirements
- 12 months as an Assistant Unemployment Insurance Referee or equivalent experience in legal practice.
- Admission to the New York State Bar and current registration to practice law in New York State.
- At least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service as an Unemployment Insurance Referee for reassignment qualifications.
