About the position

The Ungulate Research Scientist position at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources focuses on providing technical expertise in the ecology, research, and monitoring of farmland ungulates, primarily white-tailed deer and elk. The role involves designing and executing complex research projects, collaborating with wildlife managers, and disseminating findings to inform management practices. This position is essential for advancing wildlife science and ensuring sustainable management of ungulate populations in Minnesota.

Responsibilities

  • Identify information needs and plan and design independent and original research projects and population surveys for ungulates.
  • Organize, direct, and execute advanced, independent or collaborative wildlife research and survey projects.
  • Perform oversight and administrative functions of DNR research and survey projects.
  • Prepare technical and popular research reports and oral presentations for dissemination to various audiences.
  • Conduct deer population monitoring and recommend harvest designations.
  • Present data and expert opinions to committees and review management-oriented programs.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or closely related field, AND two years of post-graduation experience in scientific research.
  • OR a PhD in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or closely related field.
  • Working knowledge of ungulate ecology and management.
  • Experience in experimental design, statistics, and field sampling techniques.
  • Skill in conducting statistical analyses and proficiency in Program R or other statistical software.
  • Exceptional communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Nice-to-haves

  • A PhD with a field-based research focus on white-tailed deer or elk.
  • Completion of at least one post-doctoral research project related to natural resources.
  • Extensive computer programming experience with R.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS and geographic information systems data.
  • Experience leading and planning the work of others.
