About the position

The Union Field Representative for the NYS Public Employees Federation (PEF) plays a crucial role in advocating for the rights of union members under the Collective Bargaining Agreement and applicable laws. This position involves a mix of travel and office-based work, focusing on grievance handling, negotiations, and providing support to union members and leaders. The representative serves as a key point of contact for addressing member concerns and ensuring effective communication within the union's service delivery system.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to the Director of Field Services' needs and perform assignments in a timely manner.
  • Counsel employees and PEF leaders on their rights and options to enhance their work lives.
  • Represent grievants in disciplinary matters, including arbitration and hearings.
  • Train and assist local PEF representatives in their advocacy roles and labor relations concepts.
  • Provide assistance regarding PESH complaints, workers' compensation claims, and other employment-related processes.
  • Advocate for functional labor/management teams and train them on labor relations matters.
  • Act as a resource for members during potential reductions in force and investigate irregularities.
  • Advise and assist in implementing local internal organizing campaigns.
  • May act as lead staff in contract negotiations for PEF represented bargaining units.
  • Stay informed on PEF policies and developments in public employee labor relations.
  • Conduct regular worksite visits to address labor relations issues and report findings.
  • Perform special assignments as required.
  • Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.

Requirements

  • Experience as an elected Union official and/or staff representative skilled in grievance handling and negotiations.
  • A college degree with emphasis in labor relations or a related field is preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours and travel throughout the day.
  • Driver's license and access to a vehicle are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities (both written and verbal).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong organizational skills, including time management and attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in labor relations or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Taylor Law procedures and labor management concepts.
