About the position

The Med/Tele Nurse Support Technician role at GBMC Healthcare involves assisting Registered Nurses in providing both direct and indirect patient care. This position is crucial for ensuring patient comfort, safety, and support in daily activities, while also performing various nursing procedures under supervision. The technician will work primarily with Med/Surg patients and is expected to maintain a clean and orderly environment for patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provides care, comfort, and safety of assigned patients under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Assists patients in activities of daily living, including bathing, toileting, and oral hygiene.
  • Uses proper techniques to avoid infection and contamination of patients and equipment.
  • Performs delegated nursing care procedures as indicated or requested.
  • Observes patients and reports reactions or changes in condition to appropriate nursing personnel.
  • Completes close observation documentation and assists with feeding patients as necessary.
  • Maintains and stocks patients' rooms in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Assists in the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, including transportation.
  • Performs routine vital signs, intakes and outputs, weights, and finger sticks for blood sugars.
  • Obtains lab specimens such as urine collections and sputum cultures as appropriate.
  • Sets up O2 therapy and reinforces use of incentive spirometry.
  • Conducts bladder scans and performs oral suctioning as directed.
  • Uses and operates an EKG machine as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Performs simple dressing changes and assists with Foley catheter management as directed.
  • Utilizes electronic medical records for appropriate record keeping and cleans supply shelves.
  • Precepts new staff as directed.

Requirements

  • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Nursing as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
  • Certified as a Patient Care Technician (PCT).
  • Heartsaver (CPR Certification).
  • At least 1 year of current experience in direct patient care, preferably with Med/Surg patient population.
  • Ability to read and write English to provide basic patient care and understand detailed instructions.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, visitors, physicians, and other staff.
  • Basic computer skills.
