About the position

As a Unit Applications Engineer at ExxonMobil, you will join a dynamic team of multi-discipline engineers dedicated to enhancing the safety, operability, sustainability, and profitability of diverse manufacturing operations. This role presents an exciting opportunity to tackle real-life challenges associated with the design and implementation of innovative solutions for existing process control applications and operator interfaces. You will be involved in providing process control support during project development, installation, and startup phases, collaborating with global teams, central engineering, and other manufacturing sites to optimize operations. Your contributions will be vital in increasing process safety and profitability. You will support the installation, commissioning, and operations of both grassroots and revamped facilities, working with technologies that include basic regulatory control, state-based and sequential control, human-machine interfaces, abnormal event detection, and real-time optimization. Close collaboration with manufacturing site personnel, process engineers, and business stakeholders will be essential to identify opportunities, define project scope, assess cost benefits, and establish project schedules for new and revamped applications. In this role, you will provide active technical leadership by mentoring team members, sharing technical knowledge, and implementing improvements that deliver value capture. You will also be expected to be available for 24/7 off-hours callouts to address any issues impacting unit production, ensuring flexibility and support for your colleagues during vacations and other absences.

Responsibilities

  • Join and contribute efforts of a highly driven team of applications engineers to increase process safety, operability, and profitability.
  • Support installation, commissioning, and operations of grassroots or revamped facilities.
  • Support technologies ranging from basic regulatory control, state-based and sequential control, human-machine interface, abnormal event detection, linear and non-linear model predictive control, and real-time optimization.
  • Work closely with manufacturing site personnel, process engineers, and business stakeholders to identify opportunities and define scope, cost benefits, and project schedule for both new and revamped applications.
  • Provide active technical leadership through mentoring, proactively sharing technical knowledge, influencing across organizational boundaries, implementing improvements, and delivering value capture.
  • Be available for 24/7 off-hours callouts to address issues impacting unit production.

Requirements

  • BS in Chemical Engineering preferred; MS or PhD is an advantage; a degree from another engineering or computational data science discipline is acceptable if the applicant can demonstrate a solid understanding of process control principles and unit operations.
  • Greater than 7 years of practical experience designing and implementing effective control automation, abnormal event detection, modeling, and/or optimization applications in support of refining or petrochemical manufacturing facilities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of fundamental chemical engineering principles, process dynamics, and feedback control in plants with continuous and/or batch operations.
  • Demonstrated capability with at least one industrial DCS or SCADA platform.
  • Demonstrated capability with at least one other software platform used for advanced control, simulation, modeling, or optimization.
  • Demonstrated skills in legacy and modern programming languages and/or data analytics and visualization tools.
  • Strong technical background in advanced process control and optimization, innovative thinking, strong initiative, and exemplary communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and stakeholders and influence change to achieve desired results with no direct authority.
  • Demonstrated ability as a formal or informal leader and mentor.

Nice-to-haves

  • Refining experience is preferred but will consider Chemicals Process background.
