About the position

The Unit Assistant functions in a complimentary or assistive role to all members of the healthcare team under the direct supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse. The Unit Assistant is responsible for maintaining smooth operations on the unit, assisting with preserving compliance with outside regulators and assisting physicians to obtain all necessary information in order to treat patients effectively. The Unit Assistant also provides direct patient care and carries out individual duties on select patients in accordance with policies and procedures of Berkshire Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Assist healthcare team members under the supervision of Registered Professional Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Maintain smooth operations on the unit.
  • Assist in preserving compliance with outside regulators.
  • Assist physicians in obtaining necessary information for patient treatment.
  • Provide direct patient care as needed.
  • Carry out individual duties on select patients according to policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Patient care experience preferred.
  • Minimum of one-year secretarial experience or clinical experience in a healthcare facility preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with completion of a Nursing Assistant course and/or current status as a student in a Registered Nurse or LPN preparation program.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Strong computer skills required; familiarity with Meditech preferred.
  • Medical terminology knowledge preferred or willingness to pursue as necessary.
  • Ability to interact professionally with patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare team members.
  • Excellent organizational skills to complete multiple tasks accurately and concurrently.
  • Ability to accept and facilitate changes within systems and procedures.
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain composure in stressful environments.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with hospital policy and regulations.
  • Clear communication skills with patients and staff, both in writing and speech.
  • Bilingual skills consistent with patient population are preferred.
  • Ability to promote patient safety with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated dependability in maintaining a work schedule.
  • Assertive skills when dealing with varying levels of personnel.
