About the position

The Unit Secretary for the Behavioral Health Unit at Forbes Hospital plays a crucial role in providing both secretarial and direct patient care duties. This position is essential for maintaining the smooth operation of the unit, ensuring that all patient records are accurately documented and that communication flows effectively among healthcare team members. The Unit Secretary will be responsible for maintaining the medical records of patients, performing direct patient care, and ensuring that all necessary documentation is completed in a timely manner. This role requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. In this position, the Unit Secretary will accurately document vital signs, weights, intake and output (I&O), restraints, specimen collection, and all other treatments as required. This documentation is critical for patient care and must be performed with precision. The Unit Secretary will also transcribe orders in accordance with established policies and procedures, ensuring that all orders are clear and understood, and will seek clarification from licensed nurses when necessary. Additionally, clerical duties related to patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and maintenance of patient activity records will be part of the daily responsibilities. Effective communication is a key component of this role. The Unit Secretary will interact with patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare team members, providing updates and information regarding patient care. This position may also involve performing other duties as assigned or required, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately documents vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimen collection and all other treatments.
  • Transcribes orders in accordance with policies and procedures subject to the approval of a licensed nurse, asking for clarification when necessary.
  • Performs clerical duties related to admission, transfer and discharge, maintenance of patient activities for the records, interdepartmental communications and unit reception.
  • Demonstrates effective communication (verbal and written) with patients, families, physicians and other healthcare team members regarding patient care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPR certification.
  • 1 year of patient care and/or administrative experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous unit secretary experience or graduate of an approved unit secretary program.
  • Experience as a PCA or EMT.
