About the position

The Unit Secretary for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Texas Health Plano is a vital role within a fast-paced, high-volume department. The Unit Secretary will be responsible for a variety of front desk duties, including admitting newborns into the Care Connect system, maintaining cleanliness of infant beds and equipment, stocking supplies, and laundering specialty linens. The role requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods, reflecting the demands of a busy NICU setting. In this position, the Unit Secretary will work on a PRN basis, with variable night shifts, typically one 12-hour shift per week. The role emphasizes self-scheduling to promote work/life balance, alongside opportunities for educational and career growth. The NICU is characterized by a robust Unit Based Council (UBC) and an engaged leadership team, fostering a supportive environment for professional development. The ideal candidate will exhibit a strong understanding of basic human needs and possess excellent organizational skills to manage the fast-paced nature of the unit. Effective communication is essential, as the Unit Secretary will interact with physicians, staff, patients, and families, ensuring that all needs are met efficiently and compassionately. The position also involves adapting to changes in workload and schedules, demonstrating flexibility and teamwork to enhance patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Admit newborn babies into the Care Connect system.
  • Clean infant beds and equipment as needed.
  • Stock supplies and launder specialty linens.
  • Coordinate and perform front desk duties in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, staff, patients, and families.
  • Organize workload and collaborate with nursing to prioritize care.
  • Assist with the orientation of new employees and make them feel welcome.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • 1-2 years of Unit Secretary or receptionist experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of general office equipment and PC software preferred.
  • General knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Possesses organizational skills to function in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Positive interpersonal skills and good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with Care Connect system or similar software.
