About the position

The Unit Secretary at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center plays a crucial role in the Recovery Room by performing a variety of secretarial duties that require specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital procedures. This full-time position involves a 40-hour work week, where the secretary will be responsible for coordinating unit activities, managing patient records, and processing physician orders. The role is essential in ensuring that the administrative aspects of patient care are handled efficiently and accurately, contributing to the overall functioning of the medical team. In this position, the Unit Secretary will be tasked with scheduling appointments, billing patients, and compiling and recording medical charts, reports, and correspondence. The secretary will also coordinate the safe transport of patients and other items as directed, ensuring that all activities comply with hospital policies and procedures. A key aspect of the role is to maintain a safe environment, reporting any environmental hazards and violations of patient safety protocols when observed. The Unit Secretary is expected to take responsibility for their professional development and learning needs, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement in their role. The ideal candidate will exhibit integrity, respect, and accountability in their interactions with patients and staff. They will be proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, and other computer-related skills, although no previous experience is required. Responsibilities

  • Coordinates assigned unit activities.
  • Manages patient records (e.g. assembles patient records, files patient information, etc.).
  • Processes physician orders (e.g. transcribes physician's orders, flags charts appropriately, enters orders into computer).
  • Coordinates the safe transport of patients and other items as directed.
  • Accepts responsibility for further developing professional learning needs.
  • Maintains a safe environment complying with NLH policies and procedures; reports and directly addresses environmental hazards and violations of patient safety policy and/or protocol when involved or observed.
  • May perform other duties upon request.

Requirements

  • Required High School Diploma/General Educational Development (GED).
  • Word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, database experience and other computer-related skills.
